15 Underused Traffic Strategies to Promote Your Content

In this article I’m going to walk you through a number of highly effective traffic strategies. Even if you implement just a few of them, you’ll be able to drive significantly more traffic to your site.

Before starting out, I will assume that you produce great content. Because content marketing is were it’s at right now and sky is the limit in terms of what is possible. But having awesome content is a must.

So, let’s get started.

1. Sniply

Sniply is a new tool that I find very useful. Imagine that you could use articles of influencers in your market, to drive targeted traffic to YOUR site.

The way it works is based on content curation.

Let’s say that you share via Twitter a post written by Pat Flynn.

Sniply displays an overlay message over the original article. And you can invite people to your site via the call to action you include in the overlay message.

It could be something like “Click here if for the best 10 strategies to drive traffic to your site with content marketing”. The link can point to your site or directly to your squeeze page, if you are interested in gaining new subscribers.

So, in a nutshell, you can share high quality articles written by influencers in your industry and drive traffic to YOUR site.

How cool is that?

I recommend that you also mention the author and the publisher in your social media posts.

2. HARO

This is one of the best online tools to get free press. It’s a site called HelpAReporter.com, also known as HARO (Help a Reporter Out).

HARO connects journalists to experts in various fields. When a journalist needs to get in-touch with people that match a certain criteria, they send via HARO a request accordingly.

For example, let’s say a reporter is looking to interview a former management consultant who turned into a successful entrepreneur.

He posts the request and if you match the profile, you can respond to the query.

 3. Marketplace Traffic

This traffic source is packed with buyers, which means that if you’re not using it right now, you’re missing out.

But you are not alone, as it’s a relatively untapped source of traffic.

Here are a few examples of such online marketplaces: Udemy, SkillFeed, AppSumo and Mighty Deals.

Let’s take for example Udemy.com. This is a training site that has millions of students. If you have an information product in video format, you can post it here, in front of a huge audience.

Check out my Udemy profile: EugeneMota. I have thousands and thousands of students. The best thing is that I can keep-in-touch and send messages to my students, including links to the posts on my blog.

AppSumo has a massive 750,000+ subscribers list. If you partner up with them to list your product there, you can have an immediate boost in your number of customers.

In order to us marketplace traffic you need to have an information product of your own.

If you don’t have one yet, you should definitely consider creating and launching a product. This is a traffic generating strategy in itself.

4. Tutorial Sites

Education based marketing is a thing of the future and tutorial sites are a great traffic source to ride this wave.

Moreover, this is a largely untapped traffic source, so make sure you take advantage of it to the max.

Here are some examples of tutorial sites: Instructables.com, Tutorialized.com, Good-tutorials.com.

There are many others though, and you can get thousands of visitors to your site just by implementing this tactic alone.

5. Weekly Roundups.

Do you know what weekly roundups are?

These are weekly posts written by bloggers who link out to that week’s top content in their market.

Find weekly roundups that have a large audience and submit your latest post.

The best ones not only have big, but also engaged audiences.

Why?

Because you will get a lot of shares.

Here’s how to find weekly roundups. Just perform the following searches in Google:

  • Your keyword + “link roundup”
  • Your keyword + intitle:roundup
  • “link roundup” + your market
  • “weekly link roundup” + your market

 6. Run a Traffic or Conversion Case Study.

You don’t necessarily need to be an expert in order to produce valuable content that people feel compelled to consume and share.

You can run a case study of a traffic or conversion technique and share with your audience the results.

This can either be a once-off experiment or a long-term one, in which you share your results regularly over several weeks or months.

This is also a great way to build credibility. Especially in the beginning, when people in your niche haven’t heard of you yet.

People love case studies.

Moreover, there are lots of other bloggers that are not traffic or conversion experts.

They can relate easier to you, than to a top blogger whose traffic numbers can be perceived as unachievable.

 7. Capitalize on The News and Latest Trends in Your Market.

People are fascinated by news and you can use this insight in order to drive traffic to your website.

For example, in the SEO niche within the Internet Marketing market, whenever there is a Google algorithm update, people go crazy.

The bloggers who are first to break the news and report experiments related to those changes, are rewarded with a flood of traffic.

In each market there are examples of blogs that rose to the top via using primarily this strategy.

To get started, set-up Google Alerts for the main keywords in your niche, keep an eye on Twitter and be among the first ones to ride hot topics in your market.

 8. Social Media Communities.

Think Google Plus, Facebook Groups and LinkedIn Groups. This is one of the most underused traffic sources.

Why is this great?

Because you can put your content in front of a huge audience.

And the best thing is that it doesn’t matter how much followers you have in each of these social networks.

Let’s say that you join a Google Plus community that has 70,000 members. If you become a member of the community, you can share your post with all this big audience.

And it doesn’t matter if you have 100 or 10,000 Google Plus followers. Simply joining this community allows you to gain access to its big audience immediately.

This means that if you join several such Google Plus communities, Facebook and LinkedIn Groups, you gain access to a massive audience immediately.

Just join those communities, interact with their members, add value to the community and then share your high quality content.

If your content is good, lots of people will visit your site. And they will also share it in social media. This will generate in turn an additional stream of traffic.

9. Top Bloggers Outreach.

I’m surprised how few people are using this strategy.

Think about it.

Top bloggers in any market have a large audience.

Therefore, find a way to put your content in front of their audience and you can boost your site traffic significantly.

A good solution to do that is to write articles in which you mention top bloggers. Then notify them that you included them in a post.

You don’t need to ask for the link. Some of them will link to your article naturally.

10. Use Social Sharing Tribes to Jump-start Traffic to Your Posts.

My favourite Twitter tribe is JustRetweet.com.

This tribe functions based on a credit system.

You share other people’s content and you get credits. Then, you can use the credits to get your own content shared.

If you want to speed things up, you can also purchase credits. They are very affordable.

Using this strategy will allow you to get your first 20-30 shares and start building momentum.

Another social sharing tribe is Viral Content Buzz. You can use it pretty much in the same way you use JustRetweet.com.

And let’s not forget about Triberr. This is a really cool audience building enabler. You can join existing tribes on any imaginable topic.

Once you do, you can interact with like-minded bloggers, drive traffic to your websites via sharing each-others content and collaborate in many other ways.

11. Strategically Use Hashtags to Drive Social Media Traffic to Your Blog.

Social media can be a powerful promotion tool, right?

However, in order to fully reap the benefits, you need to be strategic about the way you promote your content.

Don’t blindly share your posts across social media channels.

Capitalize on the power of #hashtags. You can use this site to identify what tags are hot: http://tagdef.com.

Then use them to tag your related content.

12. Focus on ONE Social Media Platform to Gain a Leadership Position and Benefit From the Compound Effect.

With so many social media networks available, a lot of of us feel the pressure to build a presence and an audience on many of them.

While it’s a good idea to have a presence on several channels, you can’t build something big on each platform from the get-go.

An alternative approach is to focus and really make it big on one of them.

Then, you reach a tipping point when your presence really takes off.

So which social media network should you focus on.

In order to identify the top social networks in your niche, you can use BuzzSumo.com or Quicksprout.com, fill-in names of top blog in your niche and you’ll get a list of the most shared posts.

All you need to do is to take note of what are the most used networks to share content.

Then pick one of them and start to add value consistently.

Let’s say that you pick Google Plus.

Interact with like-minded people, circle them, comment on their post, share their post, share your high quality content, join Google Plus communities and start building relationships.

Rest assured that all this effort will pay-off. You’ll be rewarded with a significant amount of traffic.

13. Publishing Your Articles on Authority Blogs in Your Market.

Guest blogging is a top way to both drive traffic to your blog and build a brand in the marketplace.

As this technique was abused for link building purposes, Matt Cutts from Google declared that this is not a good link building practice.

However, what we are discussing here is publishing content on TOP blogs in a market.

And the purpose is not to build links, but to build your brand and drive traffic to your blog.

He key to success is to take serious action. If you write just a few posts you won’t see huge results.

Then another important element is to try to get published on top blogs in your market.

They have a lot of traffic and authority. Publishing an article there acts as an implicit endorsement for you.

And if your guest post is good, many people will click and visit your site.

14. Outbrain

This service is also called a content amplifier. You can use it to promote your content on other websites, based on the targeting criteria you choose.

Outbrain can feature your content on really high profile websites and thus, drive a lot of targeted traffic to your site.

Think for example sites like Fast Company.

If your content is good and receives clicks, you will gain more and more exposure.

The beauty of it is that the cost per click can be as low as $0.10.

And if you like it, you can also take a look at two similar networks, i.e. nRelate and Taboola.

15. Link Poaching

A very effective way to promote your content is to find people that have previously linked to posts that are similar to yours.

Then you can introduce them to your content.

If your content is even better than what they shared or if it covers the topic from a different angle, there is a high chance they will link to it on their blogs or share it via their social media accounts.

First, identify a number of popular articles that are similar to yours.

In order to do that, all you need to do is to perform a Google Search for the keyword your article is based on.

Then, you can use a backlink checker to uncover which sites link to each of those articles. Go for example to Ahrefs.com or to OpenSiteExplorer.com.

Select the “Inbound links” and then the “links” options and you will be presented with the list of pages that link to the article.

Go to each site, find the contact page and send a message to the webmaster.
